The Taishi (太師) serves as the Lord of the Privy Seal, one of the ruler's three advisors. Translated as Grand Preceptor by Tokyopop.
As a member of the Sankou, the three advisors to a kingdom's monarch, the taishi is responsible for advising and educating the ruler, but possesses no political power of their own.

- Enho, appointed by Youko to the rank at the end of The Twelve Kingdoms: Skies of Dawn
- Uikyou, Youko's Taishi at the beginning of the Skies of Dawn arc, appears only in the anime
- Daishou, the taishi of Sai during the reign of Shishou, who was Daishou's son
- Kaname Takasato, appointed to the rank for the kingdom of En in order to facilitate his return to the Twelve Kingdoms, the rank is later revoked by Enki so Taiki can return to Tai with Risai
