Sea God of the East, Vast Sea of the West is the final arc of the Twelve Kingdoms anime series. It depicts the events of the third novel in the series, The Twelve Kingdoms: The Vast Spread of the Seas. The primary storyline from the novel is adapted in the arc, whereas the most of the secondary storyline was already depicted in episode 11 during the first arc of the anime series.
In the anime, the story is narrated to Youko and Rakushun as a response from Shoryu on how Youko should deal with Shoukou, the corrupt regional praetor of Shisui whose motivation appeared to be solely to see how far he could go in defying the will of heaven. Shoryu recounts of how he was forced to quell a rebellion during the early days of his reign, one that had been caused by a man whom Shoryu has come to see as his "other half." While Enki is dubious of Shoryu's qualities, believing that all kings are warmongers by nature, Enki's childhood friend Kouya serves the apparently highly qualified Atsuyu, the self-appointed regent of the province rebelling against the king.
