Hakuchi (白雉, White Pheasant) is a bird that is kept in each kingdom's palace. It cries twice in its lifetime: once when the ruler is crowned, and once when the ruler dies. Because of this quality, a hakuchi is also called a nisei (二声, "two cries").
When the kingdom has no ruler, the hakuchi's foot may be used in the place of the Royal Seal. If possible, the hakuchi will also repeat the final words of the monarch before the ruler abdicates from the throne[1].
